After the kidnapping cliffhanger that ended last
episode ends in utter disappointment (both for Wednesday [Jenna
Ortega] and the audience), Wednesday is ordered by her school's principal
(Gwendoline Christie) to play in the school band at the fair for the
town's anniversary. In town, she is however much more interested in the
museum which she has to break into as it's closed for repairs - but the
book she was intending to study (steal?) has already been stolen. However,
some more research lead her to the ruins of a house outside of towns where
centuries ago witches were burned. Once there she has a vision, and it
turns out one of her ancestors (a girl she has seen in visions before) was
thrown into the witch house too by city founder Joseph Crackstone (William
Houston), but she alone managed to escape. Wednesday also runs into the
monster again, but again it spares her but kills a bum residing in the
ruins. The bum's camera gets some photos of the monster though, which soon
enough fall into the hands of the sheriff (Jamie McShane). Ultimately,
Wednesday does play with the school band, and at the climax of their
piece, Wednesday's reduced-to-a-hand relative Thing sets the statue of
Joseph Crackstone on fire ... A rather disappointing episode as
instead of telling a story or at least enhancing the story so far it seems
to just meander about between clichéed high school drama, bits of
sleuthing and the supernatural, doing a little bit of this, a little bit
of that but nothing with any conviction, with even the climax (the burning
of the statue) seemingly been pulled out of the hat. If it wasn't wor
Jenna Ortega, this would be a perfectly dull episode, but the longer the
series goes on, the less characters she's provided with to perfectly sound
off of.
