Anna (Sissy O'Hara), an elderly woman, finds herself alone in a room
she hasn't been to before, but it's filmed with objects from her past, and
these objects bring back memories from her past, like the last time she
tried (and failed to cook) and didn't recognize her daughter (Christie
Devine) anymore to when middle-aged she (now played by Alyson Muzila) and
her husband (Tim Connelly) went on their first romantic trip without
their children in ages, to when her husband (Nick Wakely) proposed to her
(Chelsea Hueter) and how she handled marriage and motherhood. All memories
worth treasuring - and all lost in the maze that's now Anna's mind ... Not
so much a narrative movie as a meditation on Alzheimer's, Distant
Memories nevertheless is a very touching short, mainly because it
doesn't try to hammer its message home and bank on big emotions but
instead goes for associative storytelling and this way grows what it's
trying to see organically and this way makes it relatable to its audience.
And Sissy O'Hara's on-point performance also helps to bring the story to
life in what's overall a very worthwhile watch.
