Freddy Martinez (René Martinez) is a mild mannered, moderately
successful actor who sure enjoys the jet set lifestyle with plenty of
handsome men to choose from - and of course plenty of margaritas (almost
infaviably mixed by Gregory Zarian as ubiquitous barman). That's not to
say though he doesn't take his profession seriously, and as he
appears in many mofies as a police detective, he's in constant exchange
with Detective Valentine (Al Coronel) to make his performance as
believably as possible. Also, he has of late started to write a screenplay
based on the true crime case of the "Bedroom Butcher" that he
was somehow involved with and has Valentine read it for plausibility. Then
though Valentine disappears without a trace. At the same time though he
meets Billy (Shamin Shukkoor), a crosswords editor and hobby detective,
and the two promptly fall in love. And all of a sudden, Freddy's ex
Brennan (Luis Jose Lopez) is released from asylum on good behaviour after
having served time for double murder, and he wants to get back together
with Freddy. Also, Freddy's other friends act up more and more bizarre,
and some even start being killed, and amidst all that, Freddy is asked by
special agent Strange (Time Winters) to become a mole among his friends,
one of whom's sure to be the Bedroom Butcher, to help him smoke out the
culprit. And as reluctant as he is to spy on his friends, he himself is by
no means free of suspicion, and this would be the perfect opportunity to
vindicate himself and capture the murderer of his friends at the same time
... Now this is quite a film: It's at the same time murder
mystery, horror movie and over-the-top comedy, with some satirical
undercurrents. And the combination works as while the basic story is rock
solid, script and direction put a slightly absurd and slightly meta spin
to it, giving the film an in the best way possible weird quality, and the
absurdities actually feed back into the mystery, adding layers beyond your
typcial whodunnit, while the camerawork opted for vivid colours to create
a somewhat artificial atmosphere that always seems about to crack. And
that the actors are clearly in on the joke is pretty apparent, but they
mostly play it straight though some roles are caricatures by definition.
And all of this makes up for an unusual but highly enjoyable ride.
