Walter (Kyle Partick) has always been a bit of a lonter, especially when
his dad earned notoriety for having almost drowned in a self-made
submarine. But a desire for company prompts Walter to try a dating app,
and even though his pick-up lines are all terrible for lack of experience,
he eventually stumbles upon Grace (Jessie Carl), who agrees to have coffee
with him. Neither of the two expects anything much to come out of this -
but they start to like one another very much, also because both have
artistic aspirations and are dreamers at heart. The date goes so well that
Walter takes Grace home with him that night, but ultimately she decides
against having sex with him, not that she doesn't like him, but she's
leaving town for good in a few days and could do without any emotional
baggage. Still, the two see each other again the next day, and the day
after that, and fall for one another more and more, steering full steam
towards major heartbreak ... Now I'd be lying if I claimed this film
isn't at least a little bit reminiscent of Brefore Sunrise,
as the premise of both movies is pretty much the same, that of two people
falling for one another knowing fully well that their separation is pretty
much imminent. At the same time, Walter, Grace & the Submarine
is much more than just a copycat film, it really finds its own identity
over its running time by presenting the audience with a couplle of well
fleshed out, utterly relatable characters with interesting backstories,
and the very natural acting of the film's two leads really brings them to
life and makes one care for them and their (love?) story. So a really cool
and suitably mellow movie, but be warned, you're more than likely to need
some cleenex towards the end.
