Somewhere in the country, farmer Otávio (Miguel Frazao), his nurse
wife Susana (Elsa Valentin) and their kids Belinha (Beatriz Frazao) and
Tomás (Salvador Gil) are the seemingly perfect family, they work with one
another, kid with one another, and accept each other's kinks. But Tomás
is 18 now and Belinha's on the verge of turning from a girl into a young
woman, and what's more Tomás is going to London to study economy, only
coming back to his family home once every season. Now that was in fall,
and he returns in winter, failing to re-connect with the family who seems
to be stuck in their old ways while he's moved on. In spring he brings his
girlfriend Gaya (Krupa Narci Givane), a British girl of Indian decent with
a gluten intolerance, who his parents fail to connect with, and summer has
Belinha finally opening up to her parents that she wants to study abroad
as well while Susana's on the verge of opening an alternative medicine
clinic. So there's plenty that might go awray with Tomás's next visit in
fall ...
Now above synopsis might make Autumn sound a little bit
on your nose for jts basic theme of tradition vs. progress, told on the
canvas of a family of four - it's just that the film doesn't feel like it
as it has a very humanistic approach to things, never favouring one side
over the other and being empathetic to all of its protagonists, even when
they're in the objective wrong. And that's what really makes the movie, it
doesn't try to present us with facts but tell an actual story, in not a
spectacle-driven way of storytelling, instead choosing the slice-of-life
route that lends itself to the plot so very well. And a great small
ensemble cast only help make this a very worthwhile watch.
