To save his younger sister Celeste (María José Vargas Agudelo)
from their abusive foster father, Gabriel (Guillermo Blanco) killed the
man then hid his body and raised Celeste on his own - but that was long
ago, and Gabriel has since not only become a deevout Christian but has
also married Emma (Corrinne Mica), and the two of them, living in a
house with Celeste, finding it hard to make ends meet. Then Emma learns
that her eccentric aunt Milda (Jane Hammill) has just died and she has
inherited everything. But that inheritance, as Milda's lawyer Ernesto
(Martin Harris) informs her, comes with a price: Basically Emma has to
move into Milda's quite fancy house to take care of her aunt's obligations
while Gabriel isn't to set foot into the place - the second condition is
blatantly ignored by Gabriel and Emma though with the lawyer's blessing
even. But once they're all in Milda's house, Gabriel notices changes in
both Emma and Celeste, and not for the better. Celete pretty much wanders
off into her own world and eventually disappears, while Emma grows more
and more distant and even hostile towards Gabriel, while starting to spend
time with Ernesto. And Ernesto eventually attacks Gabriel with a knife,
and with so much violence that Gabriel sees himself to kill him in self
defense, to then hide the body. Now all this is bad enough, but things get
way worse when Gabriel finds books with Satanic incantations in Milda's
library and puts two and two together ... A very nice haunted
house/possession story that might not exactly break new ground when it
comes to the genre, but while the script puts together all the genre
tropes in an original and satisfying way, a genre savvy directorial effort
keeps things tense enough throughout, and interestting camerawork using
unusual angles and moody lighting is keeping thhings compelling on a
visual level, while a competent cast carry the movie rathr beautifully,
all helping to make this pretty cool genre entertainment.
