Months
ago, Bryson (Neil Green) has found his daughter Masha (Chynna Rae
Shurts) dead in the bath tub, her wrists slit, which has pretty
much thrown him off track as he accused himself of being
responsible for her suicide. This got so bad that a short time
later, his wife Michelle (Elissa Dowling) has left him, no longer
able to cope with his self pity anymore. Since then, Bryson's
depression haven't gotten any better, and of course it doesn't
help that Masha appears to him (and freaks him out) time and again
- granted, mostly in his dreams, but these dreams sound all too
real. Bryson tries grief counselling these days, but that doesn't
stop Masha from visiting him. So eventually he gives in to a
quartet of young witches (Michelle Colman Padron, Allycea Weil, Naomi Mechem-Miller, Marieka Prom)
talk him into giving his house a cleansing, but instead of doing that,
they go on about an "unusually strong presence" and suggest
another ritual - which goes horribly wrong. And Masha keeps appearing to
Bryson - and eventually suggests a ritual how he can bring her back on his
own. Thing is, her motives for coming back might not be all that much on
the loving side, as she had reasons to kill herself in the first place ...
Now this is a generally creepy movie throughout, with all the
jump scares in the right places, plenty of tension and some bone-chilling
sequences thrown in for good measure. And then there's of course the third
act that puts everything that has happened before onto its head (though
there were plenty of clues) and shines a very different light on its
protagonist, pretty much turns its good/evil dychotomy around. And not
just that, the finale also really packs a punch in terms of gore and the
grotesque. Plus, the three leads really manage to carry the film very
nicely, making this a very cool piece of genre cinema.
