On her way through the US-American desert and unsure whether she wants
to return to her abusive boyfriend (voiced by Jonny Denero) or start life
anew, Bobbie (Britni Camacho) has a run-in with the law, more precisely
with Shriff Bilstein (John Schwab), who at first only wants to hand her a
speeding ticket, but he soon sees he can take advantage of the young
woman, and he comes up with more and more ways to fine her, and even
confiscating both her phone and her driving license, just to make sure
that she doesn't try to leave his district. And eventually he shoots at
her car, blowing one of her tires before driving off, forcing her to make
it to the next diner on foot - ten miles through the desert. Bobbie's
tough though and makes it - upon which the sheriff returns her license,
her cellphone, and her car, all fixed, as if he was her best of friends.
So maybe he was just playing a cruel game with her. At the diner Bobbie
picks up a hitchhiker, Amy (Sydney Brumfield), and the two get along great
on their journey together - until Any's brain is blown away by Bilstein,
who then gives Bobbie some hot pursuit, killing everybody who gets in his
way. But Bobbie is nothing if not resourceful, and she gets away, hiding
out in a scrapyard where she meets caretaker Ed (Travis Lincoln Cox), a
simpleton but kind soul by the looks of it. Only looks can be deceiving
...
For the most part, Blood Star is a suspense film of the
cat-and-mouse variety, somewhat akin to Steven Spielberg's Duel
(also for its desert settings and vehicle-theme) and even resembling a
game of chess for its many unexpected moves. And even if there's the
occasional spot of violence before, it's only in the finale when the film
gets really visceral, sparing its heroine nothing, which results in plenty
of gore in the process. And Britni Camacho really does her role justice,
bringing just the right mix of toughness and trauma to the character,
while John Schwab sure makes a cool ice-cold villain. Now sure, due to its
brutal finale, this isn't a film for everyone, but dedicated horror fans
are almost bound to love it.
