Mary (Sarah Zanotti) and Grayson (Sam Brooks) have a horrible car
accident - but get out of it relatively unscathed. That said, after the
accident Mary is unable to recognize Grayson anymore - which is a problem
because he's her husband and they live together. She however thinks
Grayson (or herself for that matter) has been catapulted into another
dimension and the Grayson she shares a bed with is an inferior replacement
and thus a stranger to her. This isn't reduced to just Grayson though, she
also has problems recognizing her own mother (Katherine Morgan), and the
people she does recognize, like her colleage Elise (Heather Lannan) are
the few that are actually themselves. This is of course fueled by the
phonecalls she receives from the "real" Grayson who tells her
he's stuck in another dimension, though are these phonecalls real even or
part of her delusion? Also, she has frequent flashbacks to her accident,
more often than not accompanied by visions of a shadow figure (Seth
Dunlap), whose mere appearance might spell doom. Grayson finds it harder
and harder to deal with this, but for her sake he tries to see her through
it, especially when he learns she's pregnant. Thing is, her pregnancy
really drives Mary over the edge, so much so that she gets her hands on a
gun and threatens to shoot either Grayson or herself ... The
Unraveling is without a doubt a very cleverly scripted film, mixing up
elements of drama, thriller and horror cinema to keep the audience
guessing to the very end, never giving its game away. And a genre
savvy directorial effort with an eye on both mystery and atmosphere sees
to it that the audience never gets bored while Sarah Zanotti gives a
strong central performance, really carrying the film but supported by a
very able ensemble. And all of this combined makes for really good genre
entertainment.
