After years of marriage, Yves (David Suchet) & Marthe Drouard (Nina Van
Pallandt) have grown tired from each other, & actually each have
extramarital relationships, but for some reason they still refuse to have a
divorce - which eventually gives Yves - who works in the explosive-business
anyhow - the idea to blow Marthe up, & when his mistress Violette tells him
she is pregnant from him, he puts his plan into action, conveniently placing a
sufficient amount of explosives in his house & setting a timer to a
convenient time when she's at home & he isn't ... everything seems perfect
- until there's a power failure, which affects the timer that runs on
electricity from the socket affecting the whole city - which causes her to stay
out over night (with Henri [Paul Herzberg], with whom she is having an afffair
actually), while he dashes back to the house, only to find the power being
reinstalled & the bomb blowing up in his face ...
Simply put, a very bad episode of Tales of the Unexpected,
since the story doesn't seem to have been thought through at all (or most of
the story's logic was lost in the dramatisation): Yves plans the demise of his
wife right from the beginning, yet refuses to accept her offer for a seperation
(which definitely would have been easier to facilitate) & suddenly seems to
almost panic when his girlfriend tells him about her pregnancy & asks him
to leave his wife - even though he has planned her demise for quite some time.
& in the end, why does he dash into his house when he know's there's a bomb
that will go up any minute now (& indeed does so). & as if all this
wasn'T enough to put one off the story, the ending is totally predictable.
