Their wedding's just around the corner, but then Gemma (Aisling Bea)
finds her husband-to-be Nathan (Colin Hanks) dead iu their bed, where he
had died while putting on his socks. Gemma's understandably overcome by
mixed emotion, especially at Nathan's poorly conceived funeral, that she
decides she can't let go of Nathan yet - and so she decides she still
wants to marry him, and legally that's even possible, even if only with
the Chief Justice's (Harriet Walter) express approval. Thing is everybody
wants to talk her out of this, be it her parents (Harriet Walter, Sinéad
Cusack) or her best friend Ruth (Susan Wokoma). The only one who takes her
side is Audrey (Billie Lourd), Nathan's sister she has only just met. But
then again, she's batshit crazy and wildly irresponsible. And the Chief
Justice proves to be a tough nut to crack And then there's also Nathan's
estranged mother in America (Elizabeth McGovern) who has to give her
approval, but who never wanted to have children and now couldn't care less
about them, living or dead ...
Now one thing up front, this film isn't half as macabre as the
theme - marrying a dead person - might suggest, it's really much more
about letting go and healing properly, and not anything physical. And in
fact all scenes with the deceased are very decently handled. That said,
the film's also lots of fun, especially thanks to its rather loveable cast
of characters played by an ensemble cast that play it mostly straight but
are clearly in on the joke. But the film works quite so well because at
the same time it has lots of heart, which sure enough at times has a
tearjerking effect, but it also holds the story together really well,
making this into a rather enjoyable piece of comedy.
