Other than belonging to the same family, posh show dog Gracie (voiced
by Claire Alan) and streetsmart cat Pedro (Cory Doran) have very little in
common - but then when their family moves from LA to Salt Lake City, their
box gets misplaced by the airline, they somehow get out of the airport,
and when they try to fetch a bus to Salt Lake City they find themselves
going to Las Vegas instead with a magician's rabbit (Susan Sarandon). In
Las Vegas, they promptly destroy a penthouse suite and before long find
themselves on the run from dim-witted detective Doyle (James Kee) and his
clever ferret Sherlock (Mike Nadajewski). Thinking they know the way to
Salt Lake City, they head into the desert, are almost eaten by a
two-headed snake (Alicia Silverstone), hitch a ride with a freight train
but are kicked off by the conductor turkey (Bill Nighy) and ultimately end
up in an abandoned fun fair, where they, trying to evade Doyle and
Sherlock, have no choice but trust a pair of shady rats (John Stocker, Ron
Pardo) ...
The star-studded voice cast also includes Danny Trejo as a fish who
also serves as narrator, Brooke Shields as a horse and Al Franken as a
somewhat confused grandfather.
Of course, Gracie and Pedro: Mission Impossible is tailored to
family audiences, so one can't expect utter subversiveness, and of course
a happy ending with a sugar coated positive message is pretty much a
given. But for what it is, Gracie and Pedro: Mission Impossible is
actually pretty good fun, it's full of cleverly conceived slapstick and
quite a bit of sharp dialogue, doesn't go too hard on the tearjerking side
of things, is very well-paced, the character design is quite accomplished
and shows quite some creativity, and the animation is pretty much first
rate, all of which makes this into one very entertaining family movie.
Gracie and Pedro: Mission Impossible will be coming to UK
Cinemas from 9th August 2024.
