One day, young drifter Eleanor (Olivia Fildes) arrives in Melbourne
pretty much out of the blue, and at first everything seems to go fine, she
finds a job and an apartment pretty much on the spot, finds a good friend
in Matt (Will Weatheritt), of all people the guy who has lost out on the
apartment to her, and a love interest in Charlie (Adam Rowland), a friend
of her landlord Roy's (Cris Cochrane) - but things go South soon enough,
as Roy proves to be an alcoholic who has the habit to storm into her room
drunk in the middle of the night for one confusing reason or another, she
loses her job, has problems finding another, and she's mugged in the
street. Re-enter Matt, who gets her a job at the boutique he works at -
but soon makes it clear he wants to be more than just friends, which makes
things at work rather awkward. Also, Eleanor finds out that Charlie's
actually married, and she comes to the realization that despite all his
shortcomings, Roy is the only friend in town she actually has. And then
she makes the poor judgment to bring Roy to her colleague Leanne's (Sienna
Stass) birthday party, and before you know it Roy throws up over all the
party guests ...
A slice-of-life sort of movie that doesn't exactly follow a
rigid narrative concept let alone a three act structure, instead tells its
story via a string of loosely connected scenes, all revolving around
Eleanor of course, some light, some dark, some comedic of tragic, and thus
gradually painting a picture of its protagonist's life with no clear
outcome - and the movie fares very well with that strategy, as its little
segments make up an engaging home, with Eleanor in all her awkwardness
coming across as relatable - also thanks to a strong performance by Olivia
Fildes -, with the supporting characters well fleshed out and competently
played by an able ensemble. And all of this, carried by a suitably subtle
direction that leaves the cast enough space to breathe, makes up a rather
enjoyable cinematic experience.
