For years, he (Ewan McGregor) has been absent from his daughter's
(Clara McGregor) life, but now that he learns she has overdosed and nearly
died, he rushes to her bedside, then takes her with him on a road trip -
to meet an old friend he claims. She's less than pleased to have to spend
time with her estranged father, and the fact that he takes her for a drug
addict doesn't make things better - even if he's not all wrong mind you.
That said, having all sorts of adventures together and meeting all sorts
of (mostly weird) people helps father and daughter to gradually grow
closer, and of course she finding out about his own battle with addiction
helps here as well. Then though she learns that her father actually wants
to send her to a rehab clinic, and she freaks out, runs away and hooks up
with strangers for a drug-fuelled party - only to wake up the next morning
at the side of a desert road with no idea how she got there let alone
where she is while her father almost loses it looking for her ... First
and foremost, this is of course an actors' film, and Clara and Ewan
McGregor do a great job carrying the movie, putting their all into their
well fleshed-out characters, and they're supported by a very able
supporting cast. What makes this film though is that it doesn't go the
tearjerker road and doesn't bank on exaggerated feelings but tells its
story in an almost understated way, relying more on gestures, allusions
and hints. And the film's indie arthouse looks that capture the beautiful
New Mexico landscapes rather perfectly of course also help to make this
one pretty cool movie.
