His tour in Iraq has left Gabriel (Josh Burdett) deeply traumatized, so
much so that he still suffers from nightmares from back when 10 years
later. Nightmares like the one today that left him being shot in the back
- only today when he wakes up, he's not alone in the room but finds
himself opposite mysterious Balthazar (Cuba Gooding jr) who insists he's
the chosen one. Now apparently, archangel Michael (Michael Teh) has closed
the gates of hell to not let anymore souls in so he himself can collect
them to form an army of demons and destroy humankind. And the one standing
against this is apparently Gabriel - who though needs quite some
supernatural convincing before he collects his comrades-in-arms (Arifin
Putra, Korrina Rico, Lee Kholafai), who all had difficulties finding back
into civilian lives and who are glad to follow their commander from back
when to wherever he takes them. And this wherever is Tbilisi, Georgia,
where they find a local chapter of demon hunters, the Warriors of Peace,
of all places in a strip club, get some weapons off mysterious anti-demon
arms dealer Deborah (Denise Richards), and go into war. Only no kind of
military training could have prepared them for the hordes of monsters
they're about to face ...
A piece of action horror where the focus is not so much on the
terror and suspense side of things but on fistfights and gunplay, while
bizarre monsters make up the enemy and a macabre mythology the backbone of
the story. And this method works out just fine, thanks to the film's slick
directorial effort, well staged action, pretty cool CGI work and some
wonderful and fittingly moody Georgian backdrops. And a competent cast
with some former A-listers in fun yet key supporting roles really round
out a very enjoyable experience for sure.
