Ashley (Deepti Menon) and Zack (Donald Chang) are madly in love and
decide to get married. And as it is in small towns, everybody gets in on
this, while Ashley's mum (Siobhan Fallon Hogan) and dad (Kevin Chamberlin)
and Zack's mum (Cheri Oteri), coming from vastly different social
backgrounds, can agree on hardly anything concerning the wedding - and
things are slowly steering towards chaos. And I haven't even mentioned
there's a zombie outbreak in the small town yet, caused by of all things
bedbugs, and eventually, Zack is bitten and turned. Thing is, Ashley still
loves him and still wants to marry him, and when he bites his own mum
defending Ashley, that's proof enough to her that he loves her back. So,
against the protest of Ashley's mum but with the blessing of her dad, the
wedding still takes place, with the guests in equal parts humans and
zombies, and with a zombie control officer (Heather Matarazzo) on site to
keep the groups separated. All goes well until at dinner, the brains
aren't to the zombies' liking ... The
Monkees Micky Dolenz plays the wedding DJ - wearing a cricket
outfit. Now I have to admit the humour in this one is a bit
hit-or-miss and could have done with a little sutblety, but then plenty of
jokes still hit it home, and the film has its heart in the right place -
rather a rare thing in zombies comedies -, and the slight satiric
overtones aren't lost on one without being all in-your-face. Add to this a
direction that doesn't only understand comedy but is also horror savvy,
and an ensemble clearly in on the joke, and you've got yourself pretty
hilarious zombie entertainment.
