Lindy's (Maddie Ziegler) pretty much a regular 16 year old: Mildly
rebellious yet still not mature enough to not time and again rely on her
mother (Emily Hampshire), inexperienced and yet overly curious about
everything - especially sex. She has a cute boyfriend, too, Adam
(D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), and she really can't wait to lose her virginity to
him ... but there's one problem, she finds out she has a rare reproductive
condition that due to a shortened vagina makes her sex life ... difficult,
to put it mildly. Sure, a regular insertion of medical dildoes might help
rectifying this, but that's not really what a lively 16 year old wants to
do for the next few months - nor does she want to tell anyone about her
condition ... least of all Adam - whom she ultimately loses for constantly
sending out mixed signals. After that she tries to have meaningless
try-out sex with a nice enough bloke from a nearby burger joint (Dale
Whibley), but the whole situation turns nothing if not awkward. The only
person who understands Lindy is Jax (Ki Griffin), an intersex person about
her age, who feels they were born into the wrong body, something Lindy can
relate to. Lindy even feels drawn to Jax, and vice versa, but now its her
own preconceptions about sexuality that stand in Lindy's way. And then the
secret about her condition comes out ... It really goes to
writer/director Molly McGlynn's credit that she can treat the rather grave
subjects she tackles in her movie in such a light-footed, almost comedic
way, choosing a slice-of-life approach over heightened emotional
turmoil-driven drama. And that's then exactly why this film is so
relatable, it dares to entertain instead of driving its message home with
a sledgehammer. Of course, the very natural performance by Maddie Ziegler
also helps here, and she's surrounded by a very able ensemble. And all of
this combined makes this one just a really good watch. Fitting
In will be available on digital download in the UK from 9 September 2024.
