Buffy's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) science teacher doctor Gregory (William
Monaghan) is one of the few teachers at Sunnydale High who sees Buffy's
intellectual potential. But of course, only minutes after telling her that, he
is killed by what proves to be a giant insect.
His substitute comes it the form of a seductive woman, Miss French (Musetta
Vander), who turns the head of every male in Buffy's science class, including
of course her close friend Xander (Nicholas Brendon) - to little surprise, she
will later turn out to be a praying mantis in disguise.
& while doc Gregory's dead & decapitated body is found in the school
cafeteria & Buffy, Willow (Amy Hannigan) & Buffy's mentor, school
librarian Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) try to figure out who did it, Miss
French develops a habit to invite select male students over to her house,
including Xander & Sunnydale High's football star Blayne (Jackson Price).
& of course, Xander & Blayne soon end up in cages in Miss French's
cellar, & she shows her true appearance, that of a Giant Praying Mantis -
& these insects do have a habit of killing their sexual mates after
intercourse.
Fortunately though, by a cryptic message by Angel (David Boreanaz), Buffy
& company are led to the vampire Claw (Jean Speegle Howard), who in turn
leads them to Miss French's place, where Buffy can defeat the mantis with
insecticide & bat sonar on tape - a noise that shuts down the mantis'
nervous system.
Very run-of-the-mill story that doesn't hold any surprises (without even
trying, anyone can guess most of the plottwists befiore theya are even hinted
at on screen), but fortunately the episode doesn't take itself too seriously,
& it is further helped by some witty dialogue.
