Veronica (Morgan Boss-Maltais) has fallen on hard times of late, so
she's happy to accept a job as a 24 hours caregiver for dementia-plagued
Mrs. Bloom (Carla Kidd) somewhere in the middle of nowhere, even if even
her son Charles (Dave McClain) says she's a "bit of a handful".
That said, Veronica gets along with Mrs. Bloom just fine, and her actual
spells of dementia are few and far between. Actually, Mrs. Bloom's
condition seems to improve greatly with Veronica around. Thing is, the
work drains her much more than it's supposed to, she finds more and more
bruises on her body every morning, and she at times sees people who aren't
there, worst of them all Mrs. Bloom's granddaughter Emily (Bria
D'Aguanno), who Mrs. Bloom proves to her has died from tuberculosis
decades ago. Fearing for her own sanity, Veronica wants to leave her
employ, and while Charles promises to drive her back home, he finds excuse
after excuse not to, and eventually she has the feeling her memory's
failing her. That's when she finds out the real secret of the house and of
the Bloom family - but by then it might already be much too late ... An
enjoyably slowburn piece of horror, one that's cleverly built up and
despite leading to a predictable ending leaves the (genre-savvy) viewer in
the dark which direction it's going to take most of the time while never
losing the ability to surprise. And an atmosphere-heavy direction that
makes perfect use of its old-fashioned sets and locations, and a strong
cast pretty much grant pretty awesome horror entertainment.
