If you're at all into horror and/or monster movies, it's safe to say
that you've stumbled upon the work of special effects wizard Tom Savini
more than once, as not only did he have his hands on many classics of
modern horror, including Dawn of
the Dead, Friday the 13th
and Creepshow, he is also the most visible of special effects
artists, due to numerous appearances on TV shows, and also as an actor,
among others in many of George A. Romero's films and probably most
prominently in Robert Rodriguez' From
Dusk Till Dawn. Now this documentary sheds light on his biography,
and not only from a fanboy point of view, and also uncovers some lesser
known details about Savini's life, from his live theatre work to his
family situation, and is accompanied by numerous interviews, not only with
himself but also by numerous collaborators, some quite big names among
them ... Now of course it helps to be a fan of Savini and his
work to enjoy the movie, but it's not necessary, as it approaches its
subject matter very objectively and gives good insights. And while both
the roster of interviewees and the clips from Savini's films are
impressive, they never outshine the story but add to it, making this a
really rounded out documentary you'll be happy to have watched.
