When Warren (Mari G.) asks Nicole out for the first time, she feels like the luckiest girl in the world, and it's not long before the two become a very happy couple. Sure, Warren has some jealousy issues, but in a way that's sweet even. And so it's not long before the two have two children (Ayden and Isaiah Franklin), and thing couldn't be happier ... but family life and his job soon begin to wear Warren down and he starts drinking - and his drinking soon lets his true character shine through, as he becomes more and more irritated and starts beating up Nicole repeatedly, so much so that the police has to intervene time and again and Nicole ultimately has a personal protection order issued against Warren, an order he repeatedly ignores, and he even rapes Nicole during one of his visits. Thing is, the police is only slow to handle the case, especially since as an ex cop, Warren still has many friends at the precinct. It's only when he threatens Nicole with a loaded gun that he's arrested. In court, Nicole is paired up with an able and ambitous prosecutor, but Warren's lawyer (Sean Whalen) proves to be a master of spinning the truth, And then it's found out that from within jail, Warren has put a hit on Nicole and their children ...

Fan favourite Debra Lamb shines as Nicole's mother.

Based on the true story of Nicole Beverly, who has not only co-written the screen story but also co-produced, this is  a pretty disturbing movie that really does a good job making the torture of domestic violence palbable, on one hand thanks to a new frills script that puts a focus on the subtleties of abuse, making it all the more palpable that way, on the other thanks to Kaiti Wallen, who delivers a true powerhouse performance as the film's sufferint protagonist who only slowly learns how to stand the tide. And thanks to a fittingly subtle direction and a solid ensemble cast, this has turned out to be a great movie that's unlikely to leave anyone cold.
