Amy (Hannah Deale) isn't living too happy a life, sheworks a dead end job
at Randy's (Adam Ratcliffe) burger joint which she doesn't enjoy, and the
little money she makes is mostly spent on her mother (Jennifer Herzog), a
non-confessing drug addic who claims to need whatever she takes for
medical reasons - and on top of that, mum is still successful in giving
Amy a bad conscience about it. So when one day one of the regulars at the
joint, Seth (Hayden Frank), asks her out, she grabs opportunity by the
horns, and ultimately they go all the way - and frankly, one can't blame
two consenting adults who are drawn to one another to have a little fun,
especially since they're responsible enough to use a condom. Thing is,
there's always the remote chance for a condom to break, and theirs does
... and Amy starts to panic. Of course, the panic only increases when
pregnancy test after pregnancy test turns out to be positive, and she
shows all the symptoms of pregnancy. Thing is, in the situation she's in,
she finds herself unfit to have a baby, only augmented by the fact that
she isn't on medi-care despite having a job due to a broken system. But
that said, the state she lives in forbids abortions of any kind, so she's
in a bit of a catch-22 situation - and situations like this lead to
desperate acts ... Now one can't but admire this movie for its very
unique approach to things: The story as such is a straight-out drama, but
it at least at times somehow plays like a horror movie, but above all else
this is a piece of social commentary on a completely broken health care
system made all the worse by reactionary policies. And what makes this
film work is that it doesn't use any sledgehammer techniques to drive its
point home but tell a story that is engaging enouch for its own sake, also
helped of course by capable actors playing relatable characters - and the
whole thing is an actually very worthwhile movie.
