Katie (Alina Desmond) has just come out of an abusive relationship, so her
sister Susie (Shayli Reagan) figures it's a good idea to take her out to a
cabin in the woods for her 21st birthday with their friends Alex (Lauren
Staerck), Judith (Valery Danko) and Dianne (Alina Varakuta), as a bit of
unapologetic partying is sure to clear Katie's mind. Of course, Judith,
the insensitive stoner of the group, almost spoils the fun when she tells
them the urban legend of the area that involves a homicidal pigman monster
dubbed Piglet (Alexander Butler), a story that hits a tad too close to
home for Katie - but hey, urban legends are mostly not real, are they? So
our girls party like there's no tomorrow, and don't even notice that other
friends of theirs (Eva Ray, Jack Monohan, Tais Sholvie) they were súpposed
to meet have just failed to arrive. Because you know, the urban legend
about Piglet is in fact real, and not only that, he's in league
with the owner (Jeremy Vinogradov) of the girls' cabin, and the girls are
next on his kill-list ... Now one can't exactly claim that this film
re-invents the slasher genre or even makes an attempt to do so - in fact,
this is a movie that stays firmly within formula limits and basically
confines itself to playing variations on a theme. But that doesn't mean
this is a bad slasher at all, as a matter of fact, this is a pretty nice
piece of genre cinema, with suspense in all the right places, no overuse
of jump scares, graphic violence aplenty, and a gang of likeable,
relatable characters played by a competent cast at the center of it. Sure,
it's not exactly a film that's big on surprises, but what it does, it does
very well.
