Lex (Pano Tsaklas) has been going through a rough time of late that has
come to a head in an unsuccessful suicide attempt. To get his life back on
track he has moved into his late parents' family holiday home, and his
best friend Kenny (Fernando Jose) has moved in with him for moral support
- and also to escape family life for a while. The place is big enough to
have also a guesthouse presently occupied by struggling screenwriter Shane
(Jacob Betts), whom Lex has fallen hopelessly in love with. Of late, Lex's
somewhat estranged brother, actor past his prime David (Robert Sean
Campbell), and his girlfriend, Laura (Casey Semple), have moved into the
holiday home as well, basically because David wants Shane to write a mini
series about his life - much to Lex's dismay, as for one Shane now spends
more and more with David instead of with him, and for the other because,
he has a big and tragic part in David's life story that he'd like to stay
buried in the past. So things are ... complicated - and they don't get any
better when Lex confesses to Kenny he has a crush on him, and even though
Kenny's married and doesn't want to rain on his best friend's parade, he
feels somewhat drawn to Shane as well ... My synopsis probably
makes Brotherly Lies sound like one big soap opera, but it's really
more a slice-of-life sort of film that feels very natural and
down-to-earth, which is probably also down to the fact that the film
doesn't try to explain all its backstories away but stays in the moment.
And a well fleshed out cast of characters played by a very able ensemble
that's given the necessary room to breathe by a subtle directoral effort
sure helps bringing this to life, making this a very worthwhile watch for
sure.
