Kyle (Pablo Castelblanco) is openly gay, and at his school that's
readily accepted, even supported by the principal (Anna Schlegel), and
Kyle has somewhat fallen for the school's star wrestler Lee (Jordan Doww),
whom he figures for gay as well. Thing is, things are not nearly as easy
for Lee, as he's pretty much under the thumb of his wealthy and powerful
but hopelessly reactionary father, Big Lee (Joe Chrest), his God-fearing
mother Floy (Robyn Lively), whose brother (Pete Zias) had committed
suicide after not being accepted by his own family for his homosexuality,
and the local pastor (David Koechner), who preaches hate in the guise of
love. Still, Lee accepts Kyle as a human being, even defends him against
some bullies (Brady Gentry, Deaton Gabbard) - but won't admit to himself
that he "likes" Kyle, and maybe even more. But he thinks about
Kyle more and more, even if these thoughts and dreams are often
interrupted by a creature (Lucas Turner), basically his guilt personified
after he has been led to believe homosexuality is wrong. And then one day,
Kyle stands outside his bedroom window, and Lee knows he has to let him
in, they start to make out and ... are interrupted by Big Lee, who's quick
to throw Kyle out of the house and send his son to the pastor for some
conversion therapy. Thing is, this therapy that also includes electro
shocks, doesn't make Lee heterosexual, it just confuses him more and more,
with his guilt mounting until breaking point ...
A mix between southern gothic and gay coming-of-age story
based on a very current topic but with creature feature elements thrown in
just for good measure - and this combination alone already sounds
irresistible at least iin writing, and this film really pulls it off, too,
thanks to character-centered storytelling that goes for more than simply
driving its message home. And the whole thing's carried by a subtle and
intimate directorial effort and a solid, relatable cast, all making up for
a pretty cool cinematic experience.
