Frances (Carol Ann DeMarco), Jane (Catherine Curtin) and Camille (Leigh
Anne West) have been best friends since high school, and even now, those
days gone by a few decades, they enjoy spending time together, mostly
drinking their times away. And one of these days, Tinsley (Johanna Day),
their archenemy from back when but also their landlady, shows up out of
the blue, announcing their rents have been raised by 35 percent - not so
much out of economic necessity, just out of malice. In their drunken
stupor, our three friends decide to challenge Tinsley to compete against
them in this year's pickleball tournament, to move out should they lose,
but to go back to the original rent should Tinsley lose. This is a good
idea but for one thing: They don't really play pickleball, while Tinsley
not only does, she has also secured the help from a pro, Magnolia (Susan
Gallagher). Enter Brandon (David Lansbury), a former pro turned coach
himself who tries to get them to an at least acceptable level. Brandon
does make some progress with the girls, but they still lose their first
match while Tinsley and Magnolia win. But when Magnolia's blood tested for
performance enhancing drugs and fails the test, she's disqualified and
Tinsley's in the losers' backet, bound to play our heroines. This
shouldn't be too big of a problem for her though, especially since she
shows her real cunning by picking her substitute partner ...
On one hand, this is quite obviously a parody of your typical
underdog sports drama, with all the genre tropes in plain sight. At the
same time though, Pickleball is Life: Dill With It! is also more
than that as it doesn't put its focus on its spoof elements but instead
shows a lot of heart, which starts with putting its three rather unlikely
heroines center stage and giving them rather atypical (but for that all
the more entertaining) character arcs. And add to that some well-conceived
and well-timed comedy and a very relatable ensemble cast, and you've got
yourself a pretty hilarious movie.
