Of late, South Bay, usually just the homebase of Dante's (Ken Brewer)
drug cartel, has become the stomping ground of not one but two serial
killers: There's the South Bay Slasher (Lawrence Waller), who kills women
at night rather indiscriminately, be they hookers or just passers-by, and
then there's a mysterious vigilante (Linnea Swanson), who seems to kill
all wrongdoers she catches in the act each night, but who actually works
her way up the ladder of the cartel to get to Dante, as his gang have
killed her mother and brother in a home invasion. And while she restricts
her killings to violent criminals and is thus somehow supported by the
public, her executions are still a crime and thus her murders are
investigated by Detectives Schoefield (Traci Burr) and Douglas (Doug
Waugh), an uneven couple who learn to combine their strengths and
weaknesses rather well though and eventually find a good suspect for the
vigilante in mousey dog groomer Alexis. They might have no proof, but the
audience knows by now they're exactly on the money. Meanwhile the slasher
is tracked by a couple of show-offish detectives (Tom Grindle, Al Zuniga).
The two cases converge when Alexis shoots the South Bay Slasher - and
since she's going directly after Dante and gang next, so will our
detectives ... A very nice throwback to grindhouse
revenge/street justice movies of the 1970s and 80s that might have many
moral implications and thus don't always go together with the viewers'
moral compass, but sometimes it's just nice to see brutal justice served,
with some estra points earned if it's dished out by a sexy girl. And
frankly, this is a film where the plot - let alone the "message"
- only takes second seat behind all the action and violence, and the film
has plenty of that, and is well enough paced to never go dull even for a
moment. And a relatable cast clearly enjoying themselves only helps making
this a fun genre ride.
