Slimeball Chris (Desmond Harrington) has to get to a job interview on
time, & since the highway is blocked, takes a backwoods dirtroad
detour, where he soon crashes into the SUV of a quintet of young campers
who were stopped on this road by some barbed wire deliberately placed to
blow up tires of people like them. & while he joins Jessie (Eliza
Dushku), Scott (Jeremy Sisto), & Carly (Emmanuelle Chriqui) to look
for help, a couple stays back for sex & drugs & of course
getting slashed. Chris & company meanwhile find a dead end & a
shed littered with trash, having them repeatedly mention how spooky it
is - which it clearly is not (horror directors & especially
Rob Schmidt please note: spooky atmosphere is not created by characters
saying "boo, spooky", there's a little more to the craft),
until of course they find some bodyparts (what a subtle approach). But
when they do so, the owners of the hut are already coming back & our
kids have to hide, suddenly being confronted with the corpses of their 2
friends, and the fact the owners of the hut are genetically deformed
(now they can't be good people, can they ?). However they manage to
escape the hut, with the baddies in hot pursuit & Scott gives his
life saving the others, & they find refuge in a watchtower. But the
baddies are not too stupid either & burn down the darned thing,
forcing our kids to escape via the trees, & Carly giving her life,
too. As the escape goes on, the baddies even abduct Jessie, who is in
the end of course saved by Chris with skills as if he had spent his
lifetime with the marines. Together they now slaughter all the deformed
baddies, reestablishing the Darwinian order with the WASP kids as
superior beings - an ending that makes you want to throw up ! Someone
has clearly seen Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The
Hills have Eyes & Deliverance (which is even mentioned in the film's dialogue) way too often, & steals quite
freely from these movies, but without showing the slightest
understanding of them, instead making a terrible teenie-popcorn-slasher
with macho-mentality & even racist undertones, filmed without the
even a glimpse of feeling for creating an atmosphere - most of the movies images
look like sun-flooded picture postcards -, relying on the run of the
mill gore effects & the rather mediocre make up jobs for the
deformed baddies to turn the movie into a horror-film. That of course is
not enough. The whole thing of course is also not helped in the
slightest by making - as opposed to other slashers, who at least have a
female lead - slimeball Desmond Harrington the central character, who is
devoid of any charisma & can't act worth shit - actually exactly the
character you'd wish to be killed off in the first reel. Don't watch
it ! Ah yeah, & to not break with that sickening
teen-slasher-tradition to always cast someone from a popular
teen-tv-show, this movie so-stars Eliza Dushku, who played someone on
the then popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer-teen-tv-show
(from season 3 onwards).
