The earth has been destroyed and humankind with it - and yet a group of
humans were saved by God-like beings known as the Alchemists and
transported to another world or dimension to restart civilisation anew.
And to this end, these survivors (and all their descendants) are given
three lifetimes to really make a difference. However, not all are happy to
be among the chosen ones, especially Cain (Gyton Grantley), who has been
saved while his son has been left to die, and who now pretty much wages
war to find a way back to earth - even if that won't save his son, either.
Once he realizes that, he tries to kill himself - but is instead cursed
with immortality. He then wanders the new world aimlessly, until he learns
about the breach, a portal back to the post apocalyptic earth, and he
learns that yound twins Evelyn (Madeleine Kennedy) and Noah (Chai Hansen)
bear each half of the mark that serves as key for the breach - and
ironically enough, Evelyn and Noah are the children of his erstwhile arch
nemesis Jonathan (Nic Westaway).. Now he won't stop at anything, including
and especially murder, to get their hands on the siblings, but their mum
(Maya Strange) knows about the significance of their birthmarks and
protects them, even if it costs her own life ... A highly
original mix of post-apocalyptic science fiction, fantasy and western,
this set-up episode of We Were Tomorrow works quite so well
as it manages to combine the very diverse story elements into one very
coherent story that works on a pretty epic scale without relying all that
much on spectacle, instead of concentrating on characters and their
respective arcs that are determined but also determine the main story arc.
And beautiful and beautifully filmed backdrops, cool action sequences and
a very able cast also make this episode and leave one asking for more.
