Claire (Najarra Townsend) is a very gifted hair stylist - who feels
terribly lonely though, and that's probably due to her never having had a
family, and her lack of skills when it comes to making friends. To
compensatefor all of this, she has developed the habit of killing after
hours, out-of-town customers, scalping them and collecting their scalps in
a special room in her basement where she wears them from time to time,
just to feel their owners' company. Then she's called by Olivia (Brea
Grant) to do her hair for her wedding to Charlie (Davis DeRock), and even
though Claire normally doesn't do wedding hair, she agrees to it because
Olivia's a regular. And Olivia proves to be very grateful, too, as she
invites Claire over for girls night, even invites her to her bachelorette
party - and Claire, for the first time in her life maybe, feels loved. so
much so really that she bars up her basement with her scalp collection.
But as Olivia's wedding comes nearer and nearer, she pretty much ceases to
call Olivia, turns down her offer for more help with the wedding,
ultimately ceases to answer her texts, and when Claire confronts her
face-to-face, Olivia just gives her a generic excuse about needing her
space. So Claire falls back into her old habit of killing people for their
scalps. And then Olivia's big day arrives, and of course Claire shows up
to do her hair ... More a dark character study than straight
horror, this is a film that certainly packs a punch as despite its
deliberately slow pace, it's disturbing as heck, thanks to a subtle yet
atmospheric directorial effort, but also to Najarra Townsend's strong
central performance, which really makes one feel for the character despite
all her despicable actions. And quite apart from all that, the film's
finale alone is effective as heck, providing the whole thing with a
wonderfully macabre punchline, and is not to be missed.
