Buster Keaton is a projectionist in a small town movie theatre, but he
wants to be a big detective. However, as an investigator he's a bit of a
failure, as proven when his rival (Ward Crane) for the affections of his
girlfriend (Kathryn McGuire) steals her father's (Joe Keaton) pocket watch
and sells it to a pawnshop to get enough money to buy her a present. When
Buster tries to find the thief, the pawn ticket is found, of all people,
on him, and he's chased away from his girlfriend's house ... good thing
then that she hasn't given up on him and gone to the pawnshop to have
Buster's rival identified as the man who sold the watch - but Buster
doesn't know that yet ... Heartbroken, Buster returns to his job at the
movie theatre, where they are playing a crime drama. Buster falls asleep
and dreams of entering the film, and after fighting several jump-cuts, he
proves himself to be a master detective, solving the theft of a pearl
necklace and saving a girl (Kathryn McGuire) from a handful of criminals
led by his rival (Ward Crane again) in a series of exciting fights and
chases as if it was nothing. Back in the now, Buster's girlfriend has
come to the movie theatre to apologize, and just when the film shown at
the theatre comes to a happy ending, soe does the story of Buster and his
girl ... Another masterpiece by Buster Keaton: a plot driven
mix of inventive slapstick scenes, amazing (and amazingly funny) stunt
sequences (including an extended chase with Buster riding a motorbike
riding on its steering column), and elaborate sightgags (like Buster
fighting the jumpy editing he has just entered), all of which is so well
put onto screen that it seems as fresh nowadays as it seemed 85 years ago. Highly
recommended!
