They (Lauren Woods, Toby Armour, Stephen Brindle Heath) are pretty much
a boringly average family, with mum preparing breakfast before sending dad
off to work and their son off to school, then running errands herself in
the morning - when she's suddenly attacked by a handbag thief, and when
she's unwilling to give up her bag just like that, he stabs her to death,
leaving the lives of her loved ones forever shattered ... This
film leaves no doubt from the get-go, it's a message movie going against
knife violence, and the opening monologue already states as much - but
contrary to the monologue, the film doesn't try to hammer its message
home, instead succeeds in building up characters one can relate to during
its short running time to give the knifing of the mother real emotional
impact as a result, thus bringing the message across rather beautifully.
And a subtle directorial effort and a capable cast sure help there as
well.
