Tom (Tom Malloy) and Chris (Chris Bannow) run a video portal start-up that promises to be much more user oriented than YouTube, less littered with dribble - but at the end of the day, it's a social media website that's just as profit oriented and as focused on exploiting the personal data of its users as any other site. Anyways, one day a video is uploaded onto their site that blows their minds. It's supposed to be a snuff video (but then isn't), but it actually relies on total viewer immersion and a simple but effectively handled jump scare. A follow up video is even more successful, and soon things go viral - upon which Tom and Chris realize they have to get exclusive rights for these videos to stay ahead of the game, even if this costs them money, and they soon establish contact with Tara (Theodora Miranne), the woman who has made these videos, and start to bargain with her - to then realize they might have been duped, as apparently the Tara who's talking to them is actually a girl who has gone missing two years ago. But if this was a hoax it was a good one, so Tom and Chris take their right hand people (Griffin Matthews, Abbi Snee) and drive to Tara's home to get to the bottom of it (and make a video out of it) and either confirm or expose the videos for what they are. But that said, nobody's prepared for what Tara has indeed in store for them ...

Ok, so #Screamers is a found footage movie, which of course means its cinematic language is limited owed to its approach - but other than many films of its ilk, this one's already lots of fun, starting with its premise that sheds a satiric light on the social media industry itself, to its well fleshed-out characters and their intentionally awkward relationships to one another, to its general light-footed approach to its story at hand. And the same time though, the film also understands its genre, and build-up of suspense. And add to that a likeable or at least relatable ensemble, and you've got yourself a pretty good movie!
