Three people (Anthony Taft, Kyle Bavis, Bob River)) have been murdered
in especially gruesome ways, three others (Robyn Paul Nelson, Nate Marcum,
Kyle Bavis) have been kidnapped, and what links them all together is
they've all been film festival judges, and they have all judged a certain
short film director called Bryon Jones rather poorly. Thing is, all
evidence our two lead detectives (Vince Hobart Smith, Hasan Hamad) have
against him is circumstantial at best, and they're playing against time.
So they haul in a bunch of people (Beth Metcalf, Theo White, Jessica
Lorraine, Jason Wray) connected to both the suspect and the victims for
questioning - a good idea in itself, only all the interviewees are actors
... It starts out like the perfect serial killer movie, one
with the obligatory veteran and rookie cop in the leads, with suitably
gruesome murders, and of course a tailormade suspect with a far-fetched
motive - and it's only gradually that the film reveals itself as a satire
on the indie filmfest scene, including namedropping the film's
writer/director as a key suspect and the questioning of the actors that
goes into rather hilarious directions. Now this is not a moronic parody,
nor is it laugh-out-loud funny (with a few hilarious exceptions that is),
but as subtle genre comedy with a showbiz edge it's really almost
irresistible, especially to the dedicated indie movie connoisseur.
