Candy (Natasha Berridge) is pretty much the new girl on the block, she
needed money, and money fast, and decided to turn to prostitution,
figuring it's still better than stacking shelves. But she looks so
innocent that Ange (Rachel Brownstein), a seasoned streetwalker, takes
sympathy for her and takes her under her wing - so when one of her
regulars (Rod Glenn) is looking for some fun, she convinces him to pay for
a threeway and drags Ange along. And it looks like a pretty good party,
too, there's enough champagne and cocaine to last the three of them a
lifetime or two, and considering it's a threeway, things don't get too
kinky - until Candy breaks down from two much drugs and alcohol, mixed
with the medication she's taking to numb herself for the job. Now of
course, calling emergency is not an option at an occasion like this, so
Candy pretty much dies in front of Ange and their customer ... only the
customer wants to make a hasty getaway, and Ange feels the urge to shoot
him dead to not be left with the blame for the situation. Thing is,
Candy's not quite dead yet ...
Red Street might not be the reinvention of the wheel,
but it's a very ok thriller that might come from the seedy side of things
but plays more noir than sleaze, putting atmosphere and suspense over
erotica, and focussing on characters and storytelling - and the ending
will most probably take you by complete surprise. And of course, decent
cinematography and solid acting from all involved make this a pretty cool
crime flick that's well worth a look.
