It ought to have been the perfect day for Joseph (Kenon Walker) and
Jessica (Jessica Jai Johnson), the very day they signed the deal for their
dream home, but alas it wasn't to be, as despite they being perfectly able
to afford it, someone else has made a better offer. Despondent, they
arrive home, only to see their bad day taking a turn for the worse when
they catch a gang of home invaders (Michael Gordon III, Coley Bryant,
Brandon Russell, Brandon Person) ransacking their place - and when they intruders are
caught red-handed, they kill Joseph pretty much in a panic before making
their getaway. Now the police officers on the case (K.J. Baker, Keith
Lamont Johnson) handle the case rather efficiently, and are soon fingering
the right suspects - thing is, they are beaten by someone to make their
arrests, someone who kills those responsible (and those with them,
actually). And that someone is ... Joseph himself, as after his death,
Jessica in her desparation paid a visit to a voodoo woman to get him back
- only what he came back as wasn't quite what she had expected ... Now
granted, this movie isn't exactly re-inventing the wheel, nor has it set
out to, but it's really good at what it is, an refreshingly old school
horror flick based on a simple premise but asking interesting moral
questions along the way while setting its suspenseful and scary bits at
all the right moments, plus there are at least some plotpoints that will
surprise, especially in the third act, despite familiarity of the
material. And a solid cast of course only helps making this a pretty cool
genre ride.
