Mike (River Phoenix) and Scott (Keanu Reeves) are two callboys living
in the streets who are fast becoming friends even if they come from
totally different backgrounds: Mike has never even met his mother, and his
suffering from narcolepsy stems from that, while Scott is actually a rich
kid who has a huge inheritance coming up but who rebels against his roots.
They are both under the wings of Bob (William Richert), a larger than life
vagrant who likes to see himself as a Shakespearean character but who's
basically just a big fool - which only helps for Mike and Scott to become
closer and closer over time, even on a sexual level - and eventually,
Scott agrees to help Mike find his mother, a quest that leads them from
Portland, Oregon to the middle of nowhere, Idaho, and eventually Italy.
But in Italy, Scott finds romance with lovely Carmella (Chiara Caselli),
and thus his desire to keep up his vagrant lifestyle slowly dwindles ... Everybody's
favourite Udo Kier plays Mike and Scott's favourite client in his first
US-movie. My Own Private Idaho combines indie flavour
with early 1990s coolness, arthouse sensibilities, grittiness and
Shakespearean grandeur (some of the film, including dialogue, was actually
based on William Shakespeare's Henry IV), and thanks to an easily
flowing script, a very flexible, never self-important directorial effort,
great location, and of course first rate performances by a first rate
cast, the film succeeds, too, leading to widespread success with a
mainstream audience, plus the thing has aged incredibly well, hardly
showing its 1990s roots at all.
