Wells Fargo gold shipments are robbed quite regularly, except in Boone
County, where the company's franchise is run by the resolute Cannonball
McKay (Louise Lorimer) - but since she has hired a crippled ex-con, Clem
Jones (Leonard Strong), everybody gets suspicious about her operations,
especially when she refuses to fire him. The local station agent (Mack
williams) soon enough won't allow her to run his gold anymore, but then he
suddenly ends up dead, and all the clues point to Clem, who's soon enough
arrested, too. Thing is, Clem didn't do it but respected citizen
Doc Tate (Charles Meredith), who's also behind all the robberies of the
region, and now Tate wants Clem blown up in his prison cell ... but
fortunately the Lone Ranger (Clayton Moore) and Tonto (Jay Silverheels)
have since picked up investigations and identified Tate as the crook he is
- and they put him in the to-be-blown-up prison cell to make him confess
... Pretty good episode of the series with a finale that's pure
suspense. Of course, you mustn't expect Hitchcock here, this is still
early television, and it's from 1949, when suspense techniques as such
weren't even as refined as they are now, still it's ok Western TV.
