Lonely Hearts is a low budget reality TV show where five singles
of both sexes camp together, and it's expected for romance to develop, and
ultimately two couples play for the ultimate prize, a romantic dream
vacation. And thus meet middle-aged priest Donny (Martin W. Payne), widow
Carol (Sue Dawes), and youngsters Fred (Chris Mills), Claire (Alice
Mulholland) and Kirsty (Tyne Stewart). So far so boring, but there's
something off about the show, and it's not only that host Patricia (Sophie
Atkinson) is a bit of a bitch, that the contestants are encouraged to get
drunk, and are filmed having sex via hidden cameras - there's more to it,
which doesn't even come to the fore until Claire wants to leave the show,
but is encouraged to stay one more night to be pretty much raped and offed
the next day while Patricia continues the fun and games with a smile -
knowing very well there's something dark in store for the remaining
contestants, too ... If you have a very dark sense of humour
and hate reality TV, you're probably going to love this, a piece of horror
that works just as well as a very violent satire on bottom-of-the-barrel
reality shows, and the lengths some people go to get on screen. This all
is brought to life by a clever script that makes perfect use of the
premise, this being the anatomy and style of such a show, as well as the
limited locations, to create something disturbing but in a warped way also
darkly humourous, as well as highly entertaining. Worth a look for sure.
