Sophie's (Isabella Blake-Thomas) archeologist dad Edward (Michael
Piccirilli) is trying to settle with his family in smalltown USA after a
lifetime of hunting certain relics that according to legend grant
unthinkable powers - something he thinks is nonsense of course, the relics
though are still of quite some value. And while Sophie has the usual
problems fitting into a new high school but finds a good friend in science
nerd Edison (Gabe Eggerling), her history teacher (Tayla Fernandez) finds
her dad's relics quite fascinating, so much so that she steals them and
during the high school Halloween party summons God Ohanzee (Marcelo
Tubert) who soon enough creates all-powerful "shadows" - pretty
much small black holes powerful enough to lay the world to waste in a day.
Now fortunately, there's a small group of people who know what to do in a
situation like this, the League of the Legend Keepers, led by of all
people Edward's assistant (Richard Tyson). But there's also one problem.
Before Ohanzee will go to destroy the world, he is to kill the firstborn
of the person who has found the relics - Sophie. So it's Sophie who has to
serve as bait to lure Ohanzee into a trap - but that's one dangerous
mission, not only for a high school girl ...
The League of Legend Keepers: Shadows, presumably first
of an intended series, is actually a rather fun adventure yarn, one that
playfully blends high school comedy, horror and fantasy and moves along
rather swiftly to keep the audience entertained throughout. And while it's
obviously made first and foremost for younger audiences (tweens and up
presumably), it's not too dumbed down for more mature viewers to just turn
off - which is something where relatable characters and a competent cast
also help. Sure, the film's not the re-invention of the wheel, which it
never intended to be in the first place, but it's solid entertainment
still.
