7 years ago, Sean Miller (Sean Ed) disappeared from his house and was
found only a few days later hundreds of miles away from home with no
recollection how he got there. It was a small sensation in local news for
a while, but Miller was never happy about the attention it got him, so he
pretty much made a good effort to lay low and sit it out. But now, horror
filmmaker Ash Hamilton has tracked him down, and he and a small crew
travel to his place somewhere in the middle of nowhere to make a
documentary about him - which Miller is not too excited about, yet he
seems a very friendly and on the outside totally normal man. It's only
through long conversation that Hamilton finds out that Miller has
encountered paranormal phenomena ever since his involuntary disappearing
act. What's more, things seem to be very not alright around Miller's
place, things that range from weird light phenomena to beings disappearing
into thin air. And when a regression therapist is brought in to let Miller
re-experience whatever has happened back when, she gets so upset by the
experience she leaves in a hurry. Hamilton and crew soon want to do the
same, but at that time it might already bee too late for that ... Now
I'll be honest and admit that Holes in the Sky: The Sean Miller Story
does show quite a few of the shortcomings that befall many mockumentaries
and found footage movies of its ilk, including overly shaky camerawork,
scenes just going on for too long to fake authencity through real time,
and drawn out improvised dialogue that could definitely have done with a
proper writer. What makes Holes in the Sky: The Sean Miller Story
though is its predilection for atmospheric filmmaking, paired with an
actual sense for mystery over a tendency to just over-explain. And some
very grounded performances give the movie a certain relatability, making
this one cool piece of paranormal cinema after all.
