Back when, Nova (Nikki Carlson) decided to take a hike through the
Pennsylvanian forests to cleanse her soul after substance over-abuse ...
only to several days later be found wandering around aimlessly babbling
incomprehensible gibberish. Obviously she has been traumatized, but by
what has never been found out. She has nightmares about a man with a human
skin mask chasing her around with a chainsaw, but she can't tell if this
actually has happened to her but is only her imagination running while
when trying to connect the dots. So to exorcise her inner demons once and
for all, Nova decides to go on another hike through the Pennsylvanian
forests - and while she's pretty jumpy from the start, the first several
days nothing happens apart from the occasional run-ins with harmless
nutters and actually some really nice hikers. So over time she relaxes -
not knowing of course that there are actually people killed on her trail,
and have been for years. It's only when she runs across a guy in a gas
mask wielding a sledgehammer that she realizes the seriousness of her
situation. She manages to shake him in a system of caves, but loses her
way in the process. So it seems like good luck that she stumbles upon a
house in the middle of nowhere - but little does she know that it's
inhabited by a deranged family (Adam Holmes, Joshua Reed, Dave Rupert)
that has made it a sport to hunt, kill and devour hapless hikers ...
Now of course, this movie is somewhat reminiscent of The
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - even the title suggests as much - and it
also takes cues from The Hills Have
Eyes and (of all things) Tomb
Raider. But all of this of course doesn't mean Guts on the
Chainsaw, can't also be a pretty cool piece of backwoods horror in its
own right - and indeed it is, a film that takes its time with character
build-up, but interspersed with on first sight unconnected murder
scenes that build up suspense, to eventually unload itself with a pretty
explosive third act that convinces both in the violence and excitement
department, definitely goes beyond your typical playbook ending, and
should thus satisfy any hard-boiled horror fan.
