Jonty (Harry Jarvis) is a self-appointed influencer who has only
recently had a major setback due to some shit said in a drunk video, and
now he sees a flat-share on the university campus as his second chance to
win back followers - even if his flatmates, studious camerawoman Zauna
(Loreece Harrison), loudmouthed Scotsman Pere (Daniel Cahill) and naive
beauty Amber (Erin Austen) are at first less than enthusiastic about being
a part of his story. But of course, they can't withstand the lure of fame
for long. And when they find out their flat might be haunted, a new angle
for Jonty's vlog presents itself. Thing is, the first round of haunts soon
turn out to be planted by Jonty himself, so much so that his flatmates
threaten to leave Jonty's vlog ... but then the haunting starts anew, and
even the flatmates don't think Jonty's dumb enough to try to fool them
twice. Plus, a "real" medium (Tanya Burr) investigates the flat
and confirms the spooks are real and furthermore advises them to leave the
house - which none of them does because ... Jonty's followers skyrocket.
But then, Zauna is attacked by Jim (Dominic Watters), a squatter taking
residence in the house's basement at times, and only the timely
intervention of the building's mental health officer Becky (Nina Wadia)
saves her from being knived to death. And it soon turns out he was the
flat's "ghost". At first our heroes leave the house and vow to
never return - but the story has made the headlines and got the vlog tons
of followers, and before long Jonty finds enough sponsors to convince the
others to move back into the flat with him, for money and fame's sake. But
then a real ghost, Dawn (Jessica Webber), shows up, and she's not in a
good mood ...
Now I've never made a secret out of the fact that I don't
enjoy found footage movies all that much, but this is one of the movies
that gets the approach right and doesn't use it for shortcuts in
filmmaking - quite the opposite, it uses the vlogging premise as an excuse
to get as many angles as needed to get a neatly edited film and actually
uses all the tools of good old-fashioned filmmaking rather than relying on
shaky camerawork alone (or at all). Also, the film's well-written and
structured, with nicely fleshed out characters and a satirical edge. And a
solid cast sure makes this an entertaining horror ride.
