25 years ago, a preacher called Monday (David Steen) his whole
congrefation one Sunday by gassing them with the help of his 9 year
old sidekick Little Red (William Troy Ford), Curiously enough, this
vile act of violence has been totally forgotten by today, however, several
locals seem to of late have diffuse memories or visions of Monday and the
so-called "Massacre of One", be it Salem (Spyder Dobrofsky), a
convicted sex offender who claims to be innocent, his favourite prostitute
Karisma (Alexis Knapp), cop Bandini (Christopher Livingston), who arrested
Salem back in the day and whose mental state has since taken a turn for
the worse, or brothel madam Thorn (Bai Ling) and psychiatrist Dr. Rockeby
(Eric Roberts), both of whom seem to hold some knowledge they're unwilling
to share ... Genre icon Doug Jones has a rather amusing cameo as one of
Karisma's johns she robs dry. Now Down Below is
certainly not your typical horror flick, it's much more like a bizarre
puzzle that the viewer has to piece together in one's own mind, and one
that doesn't always follow pure reason or linear narrative continuity.
Instead it tells its story in a very associative way, following a dream-
or nightmare-like logic with never shying away from absurd or surreal bits
- and the results are pretty fascinating, thanks to director Spyder
Dobrofsky using a rich cinematic language while telling his highly unusual
story in a very self-assured way, supported by a cast (including himself)
who give it their all to keep this thing relatable. It's probably not a
film for everybody, but for those among genre fandom with an adventurous
mind, this is definitely rewarding.
