For their first date, Ginger (Anne Rizzo) takes Joe (Jose Guns Alves)
to a "literature liaison" to a mansion where they are welcomed
by Valentine (Geena Matuson) and the mysterious Edgar (Scorpio), owner of
the mansion. The evening starts light enough with dinner, but when Ginger
gets lost on her way to the bathroom, the cards are shuffled anew, and
while Edgar tries to make Ginger his mate, Valentine flirts heavily with
Joe - and since both Ginger and Joe have been drugged by them they even
succeed. However, this seems to be only a prelude for much worse things to
come ... The story behind Disregard is an interesting
one, as it started life as quite an ambitious feature that was eventually
abandoned though, only to become the basis of Disregard
the Vampire - A Mike Messier Documentary, which basically gives a
rundown on the challenges with the movie. However, several years later the
footage of the movie was re-assembled, but not in the intended way but as
a silent 15-minute short, complete with title cards and everything - and
the result is quite fascinating, as the film, basically a power struggle
between alpha males with the one side really standing no chance, gets some
extra dynamics by having the dialogue cut down (so as to not avalanche the
audience with title cards) and concentrating more on the visuals instead.
And here's where the film falls a little short, as since it hasn't been
shot as a silent, some shots lack a bit in visual urgency to make up for
the absence of dialogue and on-screen sounds. But even so, this is a
pretty unusual film that's well worth a watch.
