Alex (Manuel Melluso) has just been dumped by his girlfriend Alice
(Alba Barbullushi), and to make up for this he throws himself into work,
which is to develop a social media platform, Denkraum, that
connects to people's subconscious. Now however this is not so much to just
forget about Alice but to keep tabs on her via this very new technology.
Thing is, things soon start to go sour on several fronts, for one his
employers want to boot him off the project to claim all the fame for
themselves, and then there's several disturbing occurences that might have
actually have happened or just be Denkraum-induced visions - and
Alex doesn't know what's worse. And on top of all that, there's a killer,
Jacob, whom Alex meets virutally while developing Denkraum, and who
might be after Alex's friends - but despite his best efforts, and Alex is
an expert in the field, Alex can't figure out who Jacob is ... Now
Denkraum isn't a film that's all that easy to follow - and with
that in mind above synopsis is only my interpretation of what I think has
happened -, but that's not a point of critique as it seems to be the very
concept of the movie, which ditches narrative conventions for a maze-like
approach to storytelling, which doesn't necessarily make a distinction
between dreams/nightmares and reality and instead sees them all as part of
a bigger picture, which the viewers are invited to piece together
themselves. And in line with this the direction of the movie's also very
much on the avant garde side, which really fits the story, and makes this
a very unusual yet pretty rewarding cinematic experience.
