To get some secrets about an uranium mine out of Eastern Europe, Steve
Mitchell (Brian Donlevy) has to infiltrtate the mine, which is actually
little more than a labour camp. Getting in isw not the problem thanks to
Jan (Fritz Feld), an Eastern European who has made it his profession to
get people out of prison and out of the country, but once inside, Mitchell
soon attracts the attention of evil warden Bolger (Michael Ansara). He
gets the attention for all the wrong reasons of course, but still ... Then
someone blows up part of the mine, too, and Mitchell is on top of Bolger's
list of suspects, but in the end, he still manages to keep his date with
his contact (Lester Sharp) and break out of the camp with Jan's help while
Bolger, going after him, is shot dead by his own men mistaking him for an
escapee. A very straight-forward story with little time for or
interest in plottwists that's painting a very clichéed and grim picture
of Eastern Europe that has more to do with Western propaganda than actual
facts - but decent pacing, a bunch of colourful characters and Brian
Donlevy's fitting no-nonsense attitude make this one worthwhile despite
everything.
