About a century or more ago, teenaged Clara (Aurora Elli) got walled in
by her own dad (Tommaso Preda) because he got spooked out by her psychic
abilities - and since then, the house, Villa Clara, has a reputation of
being haunted, so much so that every attempt to renovate the place was
abandoned because the workers would run away and never come back. But it's
the 21st century now, and ghost stories are a thing of the past, and when
Helen (Veronica Urban) inherits the place, she and her fiancé pay little
heed to the old wive's tales and want to fix up the place for good, with a
team of dedicated restorators (Michael Segal, David White, Clausia Costa,
Elisa Russo, Laura Simpolo, Giuseppe La Rocca), who when one of their
ranks (La Rocca) disappears even take it as a prank. But of course, in the
long run, they all have top learn that there's something decidedly
sinister about Villa Clara, and the place's caretaker (Charles Goodger)
reveals to Helen why the house, or rather the demon that possesses it, has
chosen her personally for its vendetta ...
Now storywise, Clara doesn't exactly break new ground,
and frankly, the narrative sometimes loses itself a bit in its many very
similar characters - but that hardly matters because the film's quite
simply scary as hell as it's heavy on atmosphere, keeps things mysterious
throughout to keep things on a high level of unease, and places its jump
scares and its outbursts of violence well to not be self-serving but help
the bigger picture to just make this one a really cool genre ride.
