It's Christmas at a retirement home - and one of its denizens, Victor
(Stephen Oliver) couldn't care less, he's not into the holiday, or into
gatherings of people that go with Christmas celebrations for that matter -
or in people, really. He's only into two things, one's a guinea pig that's
roaming the place and that comes visit him at very regular intervals, and
into Gloria (Sue Scantlebury), another of the facility's inmates and a
very dear friend. However, their relationship is strained of late, ever
since he hasn't been there when she needed him most, something he thinks
he'll never be able to forgive himself ... Now I have to admit,
in writing this movie doesn't sound like very much, basically a retirement
home tearjerker - but there are films that are so much more than their
synopsis, and this is one of them: For one, the film's central characters
are well fleshed out, don't follow clichés and have an unexpectedly
entertaining side to them, and on top of that, the film's not told in a
straight line but often relies on association rather than stringency, with
its major conflict resolved on a surreal level that draws the audience in
with welcomely impressive imagery, all resulting in a pretty enjoyable
short.
