Harry (Peter Alberti) loves his girlfriend Isobel (Charleen Meredith)
madly and cannot live without her - but as she appears and disappears
quite randomly, sometimes in the middle of a conversation, we can't be
sure if he's even living with her - until she's run over by a car, and
that evening her dad (James Tilley) calls Harry to inform her she's dead.
When he later meets her in the streets though, she confesses that her dad
wants to shield her from him ... but then Harry gets run over by a car -
and just maybe the true story about their relationship is something else
entirely ... Part character study, part love story, with bits
of psychosis thrown in that give it a bit of a horror vibe even, Being
Without is most certainly a very unusual movie - and a very
well-conceived one, too, as despite of the many levels of reality the film
carries it never gets confusing or confused and manages to tell its story
in a very congruent way. Likewise, the direction is very stylish but gives
the story and cast enough room to breath, and the cast all give solid
performances so to bring their characters to life, even if their
existences are ethereal and even iffy. Well worth a watch for sure!
